HOW NOT TO POSE!

Celebrating Jean Craighead George

One of my favorite authors when I was in middle school was Jean Craighead George.  She wrote the two classics, "Julie of the Wolves", and "My Side of the Mountain".  Ms. George always featured nature and animals in her stories because of her great love for both.

This week we are reading "Cliff Hanger", one of her adventure stories she wrote for a younger audience.  "Cliff Hanger" tales place in the Grand Teton National Park.  Please take time to visit the following websites to learn more about Jean Craighead George and the Grand Teton National Park.

Mr. Nix

Helping Your Child Understand the Skill of Cause and Effect

Re-posted from 9/11/11

Cause and effect is one of the more difficult reading skills for students to see.  Because a fictional narrative is a continuous stream of causes and effects, it can sometimes be difficult to see the cause and effect relationships in a story and easily "see" what the causes for specific effects are.

One helpful way to see cause and effect is to look for "clue word" such as and, because, and so.

For example
Tim forgot his math book, so he was unable to complete his homework.

The word so signals the cause and effect relationship.  The part of the sentence before the word so is the cause, and the part of the sentence after so is the effect.

Kelly studied her spelling words and she got an A on the test.

The word and signals the cause and effect relationship.  The part of the sentence before and is the cause, and the part of the sentence after and is the effect.

The signal word because is a little different....

Keegan was hungry because he skipped lunch.

The word because signals the cause and effect relationship.  The part of the sentence before because is the effect, and the part of the sentence after because is the cause.

Benchmarks, DRA, and FAIR Testing

Coming up this week you will be hearing your child talk about beginning of the year assessments.  These are assessments that students take at certain intervals throughout the year.  Assessments like the Duval Interim Benchmarks. DRA, and FAIR help us track the learning gains the children are making.
The September benchmark results will help me plan and target instruction to best assure all of the students are successful on the FCAT.

The material on the benchmark assessments are end of third grade material.  Obviously we don't expect students to score high on the first test.  Students who are more advanced readers may score fairly high, but the average reader will score between 20-60 percent accurate.  This is completely expected and normal.

In the coming weeks I will also be assessing your student's reading level using the DRA (Diagnostic Reading Assessment).  This will help me assist your student in making the best selections form the classroom library, as well as at the public library and bookstores.

The first FAIR (Florida Assessment of Individual Reading) assessment will be Wednesday, September 19, 2012.  The FAIR test in third grade DOES NOT have a word list the children need to read.

I know that testing can cause anxiety and frustration with students and parents.  Unfortunately it is neccesary and required that the children participate in these assessments.  I try to reassure studnets that these are just "snapshots" of performance on a given day.  Please partner with me in reassuring the students that assessment weeks are stressful but everything will be back to normal soon.

The best thing the students can do is make sure to get plenty of rest.....

eat a good breakfast......

and keep a positive attitude
