Drawing Conclusions

This week we are working on the skill of drawing conclusions.  It is simply another form of inferring.  I tell the students to "think like a detective".  A good reading detective uses two things to help them draw conclusions;
1. Previous knowledge or experiences
2. Text evidence or clues

This week, play a game with your student.  Think of people, places, or things that are familiar to your child (so they have some background knowledge).  Make statements such as "I have 4 legs",  "I am furry", "I like to play with string and chase mice".

"What am I?"

Have a great week :)

Celebrating Dav Pilkey

Last week and this week we are working on the story "Dogzilla" by Dav Pilkey.  Mr. Pilkey is most known for his series, "Captain Underpants".

The story "Dogzilla" starts off our next unit of study, "Incredible Stories".  The next four stories will be part of the fantasy genre.  We will work on understanding realistic and fantasy elements in stories as we proceed thorough the unit.

We also read the companion book to "Dogzilla", "Kat Kong".  This helped us review and work on the compare and contrasting literature skill.

Check out Dav Pilkey's website for a complete list of his works, and fun activities!
