Week of March 12, 2012

Don't forget the zoo field trip on Thursday, March 15, 2012.  Please send a sack lunch for your child.  They will be eating in the classrooms when we return to the building at 1:00 PM.

If you are chaperoning please be at the building in time to get a visitor's badge from the main office before reporting to the classroom (between 8:45-9:15).

There is no homework packet this week and no spelling until after FCAT.

Take home packets will be sent home on Tuesday, 3/13/12.  Please review and return on Wednesday 3/14/12.

Spring break is next week, 3/19-3/23.

The next early release day is Wednesday, 3/28/12

The third nine weeks ends on Monday 4/2/12.  There will be a teacher's planning day on Thursday 4/5/12 and no school on Friday 4/6/12.

Just a reminder: Spelling has been cancelled until after FCAT.  There will be no Spelling Packets for the rest of the quarter.  Be on the lookout, however, for Skill Packets as the weekly homework sent home on Monday and due on Friday.  This week students will be reviewing Benchmark 3.1.6.3: Context Clues.

Weekly Update, Week of 2/27/12

*Mid-Term Progress Reports went home yesterday (2/27/12).  Thank you to those of you that have already sent it back in signed.

*Yearbooks are still for sale.  The cost now is $25.00

*The field trip to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens is on Thursday, March 15, 2012.  If you would alike to chaperone the cost is $11.00.  Please send the money in by Friday, March 9, 2012.

*Scholastic Book Orders are due Friday March 9, 2012.  I will place the order that afternoon.

*Spring Break is coming in a few weeks! (3/19-3/23)

Fact and Opinion

This week's target skill is fact and opinion.  A fact is something that can be proven true or untrue.  An opinion is based on feelings or thoughts of a person.  Discerning between fact and opinion is essential to becoming an informed and active citizen.  As your child goes through school, and into higher education, they will be presented with facts, and many varying opinions.  Critical thinkers are trained to see facts and opinions, and be able to accurately interpret and process them.

This week, have your child look at a newspaper or news magazine like Time, Newsweek, or US News and World Report.  See if they can find facts and if they can find opinions.  With the presidential race heating up I'm sure they will find plenty of opinions!

No Spelling Until Further Notice!

Spelling Packets and spelling tests will be suspended until after FCAT.  Please be on the look-out for homework, however, as we work on skills like antonyms, synonyms, and affixes.
